Let's Read
This is a beautiful, bouncy, rhyming story. It makes us feel the fun and excitement of going along to the beach. It is full of wonderful verbs.
Read to the children, pausing to explain things along the way. You may want to hand each child a puppet pony to move along to the rhythm of the story as you read it through the second time. Discuss the ryming and rhythm of the story further if you wish. |
After Reading
Activity 1
Sit in a circle. Have a cuddly toy to pass from one child to the next. The person holding the toy is the speaker and everyone else must listen carefully to what they have to say. The child may pass. Noni the pony is a great mate to Dave the dog, helping him when he needed it. She is also funny and kind. It’s nice when people make you laugh or share toys with you. Think about a time when: Someone has been a good friend to you or you have been a good friend to someone else. Now pass the toy around and take turns to share these experiences with the class. |
Activity 2
What is Noni like? If you had to describe Noni the pony to someone who had never read the book before, what would you say? Explain to the class that every character is made up of lots of different things: •Appearance •Where they live •Likes/dislikes •Who they are friends with •Favourite food/drink/colour •Hobbies •What they are like on the inside. Use an image of Noni on a poster with sub-headings in clouds around her. These may be labelled, Appearance; Where she lives?; Likes/dislikes; Friends; Hobbies; What they are like on the inside (eg. kind, helpful). Add the children's responses to the descriptions of Noni.
