Look at the front cover
What do you think this story might be about?
Are there any clues on the front cover as to what the present may be?
Who or what is Paraphernalia? WHAT A BIG WORD! What does paraphernalia mean? Discuss this with your teacher and maybe see if there is any reason for this name in the story after you have read it.

After Reading....
When Dottie said , "My dearest friend, you have given me the perfect present," what did she mean? What was the present that Dottie received? Was it JUST the present of eggs and chickens? How did the eggs and chickens change Dottie's life?

The Mystery Story Bag!
Invite children to come and pick a mystery object out of the Mystery Story Bag. Do as a whole class activity as a way of modelling how to use the bag for future small group activities.
They then have to say what part of the story that object reminds them of and what it means. For example if they pull out a feather they might say that it reminds them of Paraphernalia and how she would make Dottie happy when she came over to visit. How it would make them both happy to share the trip in the decorated hat around the neighbourhood. etc etc. Encourage the children to talk about the characters, relationships between characters and the events or actions that changed the course of the story.
