Before Reading
What do you know about pug dogs? Do you think that it is fair to name a pug, Pig???
According to the Pug Rescue & Adoption Centre in Victoria, Pugs may be cute to look at but they also snore, wheeze, grunt, dribble water every time they take a drink, fart, sneeze in your face and drop copious amounts of hair. Do you think the dog on the cover is cute or ugly? People will probably differ in their opinions about the look of a dog like this. How do you think the dog in this story is going to act? Why do you think this? |
Reading and discussing Pig the Pug
After reading the story, go back and look at the first page. Who does this book belong to? How important is this now that you have read the book? Why?
What words would you use to discuss the character of Pig the Pug. Make a list of them on the whiteboard. Even though we use these words to describe him, most children love the character of Pig! Why do you think this is? Do you think there is a little bit of Pig the Pug in all of us? Do you think that Pig learnt anything about sharing by the end of the book? Do you think he is going to change? Read the last page again and discuss this? |
How do you think Trevor feels to be treated so badly by Pig?
Why do you think that Trevor tries so hard to be friends with Pig? What would you do if you had a friend like Pig who was unkind and unsharing? Interviewing Trevor and Pig If there is time, choose 2 children to play the roles of Trevor and Pig. Have them sit out the front to be interviwed by the class. They are to answer the class' questions as if they are really that character. |
