Seriously, CINDERELLA IS SO ANNOYING!
In the original version of Cinderella the Ugly Stepmother is certainly portrayed as a baddie or evil character. We are left in no doubt about that! Cinderella is innocent and truly didn't deserve to be treated so badly. I wouldn't trust that stepmother at all!!
This is the same story, told from the point of view of the stepmother herself. Can the stepmother convince us that she is not really at fault and that she is the one who had a hard time??? How could she possibly persuade us to believe that?? The stepmother in this story is trying to PERSUADE us (the readers) to believe her side of the story. You be the judge to see if she does a good job at persuading us. |
Before Reading
Briefly recall the traditional story of Cinderella.
What sort of character is Cinderella? What sort of characters are the stepmother and the stepsisters? Which characters do you feel sorry for? Which ones do you like? Which ones don't you like? How do you think this story will change from the traditional one if it is told from the point of view of the stepmother? Today we are going to watch and listen to a reading of this text. It is read very expressively. We can really hear the voice of the stepmother who is telling us her version of what really happened. Her "point of view" is very clear and she uses many tricks of persuasion to make us see things her way. |
