Encourage the children to join in and help with the repetitive parts of the rhyme. Discuss how the rhyming patterns help us to be able to guess or predict what happens in the story. |
Whole Class Discussion
What happened each time the magic hat landed on someone’s head? What sorts of animals did the people become? Put up cards on the whiteboard. Write the word that rhymed with the animal.
If the magic hat landed on your head, what animal would you like to turn into? Why? (Pass the hat around the circle and have the children take turns to contribute to the answers)
In the story, how did the animals turn back into people? Do you think they were glad to be themselves again?
What happened when the wizard put the hat on his own head? Did this surprise you?

Making up some new rhymes. Can you guess?
Oh the magic hat, the magic hat.
It moved like this, it moved like that.
It spun through the air
And onto a dish
And sat on the head of a scaly blue ............
Oh the magic hat, the magic hat.
It moved like this, it moved like that.
It spun through the air
And sailed on a boat
And sat on the head of a noisy old .........
Oh the magic hat, the magic hat.
It moved like this, it moved like that.
It spun through the air
And rolled on a log,
And sat on the head of a barking brown ..........

You're turn! Rhyming Card Games
Work with a partner to sort the cards into rhyming pairs.
Put up your hands when you think you have them sorted.
Turn all the cards over.
Play rhyming memory game.
Keep the cards that you turn over that rhyme.
Each person only turns two cards at a time and doesn't move them.
Check that children are hearing the words that rhyme and that they can match them. Help where necessary.

Finishing Off
Bring all children back together.
Discuss what we have learnt about rhyming words today?
What helped us to know what the hat was going to turn the person into?
How did you know that the man was going to turn into a toad; or baboon?
Give out the cards randomly and call out one word card, ask that child to stand up and then the rhyming partner! They can go and borrow!
