Introduction
Today we are going to read the story, Wendy, to give us some ideas for writing arguments.
Firstly, lets look at the from cover. What is unusual about the chicken? Why would a chicken be wearing a helmet? What do you think this story might be about? Does the font of the title give you any other clues? Or the starts around the border? |
Read the story and then discuss
Right from the beginning we learn that Wendy is not like other hens.
How is she different? What do regular chickens do? Is it ok for her to be different? Do you think it was a good thing for her to go and follow her dreams? Why/Why not? What did she discover about herself by the end of the story? Could the story have ended differently? Share with the class some other possible endings for this story. |
Activity
Remember from the last couple of weeks, we have been looking at sentence starters for stating your opinion and we have looked at the value of giving reasons to back up your ideas. Today I am going to give you a topic and I want you to decide whether you are for or against. Then I want you to write your opinion on the topic and back it up with a reason. I'll give you an example below.
Is it a good idea to follow your wildest dreams?
AgainstI believe that following your wildest dreams is a ridiculous idea. Wild dreams are not at all practical and you would be wasting your time.

For
It is certainly a good idea to follow your wildest dreams. If you never tried to do the thing that you have always dreamt about you would never know how your life could have turned out.

Your turn ...
Perhaps work with a partner to come up with your argument. Write it down.
When the class has finished, you could share the responses with one another.
